Copy Cat...Where Do You Draw the Line?

My friend recently asked an acquaintance what color paint she used in her home. The acquaintance refused to tell her. She said that a lot of time and energy was spent in coming up with the color and that my friend should really come up with her own color scheme.

Do you think she over reacted?

I never mind sharing ideas with friends because I know that most of the time they will end up with something of their own design anyway. I have great friends, who have great taste, and can use another person's design as inspiration rather then copy it to a tee. I am usually flattered when someone wants to know how I accomplished a particular look and in my experience, when they do copy it exactly, it never looks as good as the original.

What are your thoughts....

I think that is over the line. I love to copy other peoples creativity, but that does not mean I am going to copy every single aspect of their creativity. Just because you might copy one persons walls does not mean that your home will then look identical. I think it is great to share creations. Which reminds me, I wanted to see if you have a great soft cream color you could recommend? Our wall leading upstairs is white and ugly. I just want a soft cream that will flow well from one room to the next.

I think share and share alike! You have been so generous with your ideas.Thank YOU!! I once had a friend who sang a beautiful song and she refused to share the composer with the group. We all were a little taken back. Any way I have two healthy 7 and 8 yr olds and I can't wait to grow out of the "Copy Cat" stage. A good idea is a good idea. For heavens sake...SHARE!

To imitate someone is to pay the person a genuine compliment — often an unintended compliment. The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition. 2002.

A. I would never try to keep a paint color a secret.

B. If I did want it to be a secret, I would have been a little more discrete- or said "oh I don't know the name".

C. It is probably really obvious, like a pottery barn color that she thought was a super find!

Funny thing, I hear about this stuff all the time (friends getting bent out of shape over a "copy cat"). I guess I can just say that I feel so happy that my friends realize that life is too dang short not to share. Many of us learned that in preschool.
