I wished for it – I really did. There is finally a way to save, organize and share fabulous inspiration photos online.

It is called Pinterest and if you haven’t already heard about it – you need to check it out.

It is the perfect way to store and share inspiration photos from blogs and websites. My favorite part is that it records the SOURCE!!!! of the photo. This was the big problem with copy/pasting or saving photos from other peoples blogs into my inspiration folders on my computer. I could never remember where I found the photo in the first place. I have only started to enjoy this online tool but wanted you to all know about it so that we can start following each others boards!!!

Is your dream home with in reach?

One of the best things that has come from design blogs is the ability to see into “everyday” homes that are well designed. In the past, our only window into the world of design was through shelter magazines, and books, which typically feature homes that leave us saying…”only in my dreams”. Don’t get me wrong, I love to dream but nothing excites me more then a blog post about a beautiful home that I can see myself living in and actually AFFORDING!

Joni, of Cote De Texas, has posted some of my all time favorites. I love that because she is so cool people just send her pictures of their homes. Joni’s home is fabulous too! I went head over heals for this home that she featured last week.

Partly because I think it is fabulous but also because it just kept saying to me, “you could do this Bethany!”

I think that is one of the reasons we love design blogs so much. It gives us a glimpse into another persons life and home and allows us to wonder, “how is she doing this?” and “could I do it too?”

Last night I read about Laurel at Abode Love and her adventures painting horizontal stripes down her hallway. Where else, besides a blog, do you get such honest details about what it really took to accomplish a look?

Not only does she tell us how to do it, she also admits that she screwed it up the first time around and spent three weeks fixing the paint bleeds through the tape. OK I get it- it looks great but it took some work- this didn’t happen overnight.

As design blog readers and writers, I think we are all looking for a little bit more then just great ideas. I think we want reassurance that we too can create the home of our dreams and that with a little bit of creativity - it is all with in our reach !

A little family update

It has been three weeks now, since Hazel was born. We are enjoying her so much! She is an angel baby who loves to sleep. Finn has been such a great helper. He is the proudest big brother in the world. He loves to hold her and tries to help out in any way that he can.

Thanks to everyone who wished, and hoped and prayed for this miracle for our family. We are so grateful to finally have a baby sister.

The best Christmas gift ever!!!

Our sweet baby girl was born on December 22nd at 12:45 in the morning. She weighed 7 lbs. 3oz. and was 18 inches long. We brought her home from the hospital on Christmas Eve. She was wearing a onezie that said “best gift ever”. Her name is:

Hazel Grace Christensen

Needless to say we are beyond excited and happy. This is a miracle that we have been praying for – for a really long time!!

The Nativity by Brian Kershisnik

If you live in Salt Lake City, RUN – DON’T WALK, down to the LDS Church History Museum to see this beautiful mural by Brian Kershisnik called "Nativity". It is a really fun painting to see in person because it is about 7 feet tall X 17 feet wide. I heard that is was recently sold to a private buyer and will no longer be on public display. So hurry!

I attended the museum with my dear friend and our children. It was awesome to see the painting through all of our different eyes and hearts. Each one of us saw something a little bit different yet we all felt the significance of the event depicted and how it has impacted our lives. With my new baby on her way, I couldn’t help but think about all of the angels (both earthly and heavenly) who have helped to make this miracle possible. And then I found this painting, also by Brian Kershisnik called “Angels”:

Don’t you think I need this one? I do!

In Transition

I look at life in much the same way I approach decorating my own home. It is a process, one that is never completely finished. There will never be a single moment in time when everything is in my house is completely perfect. I am OK with that because it gives me the flexibility to constantly change things and reprioritize. Once project Z is complete project A will need to be readdressed. So what’s the big rush? I love the ever evolving aspect of my home and my life.

With that said, I am so excited to have a new baby!!! She could be born any day now. Her due date is just 10 days away. I have been running around like crazy wrapping up client projects, shopping and decorating for Christmas, decorating the nursery and purchasing fun girly clothes for the baby. Yep- I am nesting. I have also enjoyed a few ski days as well – trying to get my wiggles out.

I have been thinking about this blog a lot and have not posted for a long time. Things are going to have to change around here but I am not sure how yet. My blog has been an ever evolving entity of it’s own. What started out as a place to share ideas about my home remodel, turned into a way to build a clientele, make friends all over the world, share photos of my work and post ideas and inspiration about things I love: decorating and remodeling.

Since I won’t be working with clients for a while and my own home is at a bit of a standstill, I will be searching for a new voice. Please be patient as I figure this out! Like all transitions it might take me a while to get it just right.

The grain sack pillows are made of jute, they have a fabulous nubby texture (looks like linen isn’t quite as soft), the wreath and postage stamp pillows measure 18" X 18" , and the weather vane is 11” X 20.5” (the nest pillow is already sold out – sorry).

The price is for the cover only. I would be glad to include the polypropylene pillow form if you want it but it might cost more for shipping. I have replaced all of mine with down inserts anyway and I am sure you will too!

Our Miracle

We are so happy to announce that we have been matched with a birthmom! We could not be more excited or honored. Our baby girl is due December 21st! After setting up the adoption blog, I emailed the link to everyone I knew and posted it on my facebook page and this blog as well. With in a day or so we were contacted by a sweet birthmom who had read our profile and felt a connection to us. We had no idea this would all happen so fast but we are so excited!

Hoping to Adopt Another Baby !

I don't usually get personal here. This is a design blog after all. And even though this is a small blog, I know that I have readers from all over the country. I have learned a lot about networking through blogging. This blog has been a very effective spring-board into a design career and I am so grateful for it. One thing is for sure – blogging works! People start reading, they get to know you, and the next thing you know - you have a new client or friend!
As you might know, our son, Finn, came to our family through adoption five years ago. We are hoping to adopt another baby and we think blogging about it will help. We started a personal blog so that anyone considering adoption may get to know us better. You can pass the link along. It is http://bethanylarsadoption.blogspot.com/. If you know of anyone that is considering adoption for their baby, please let them know about us!
Times are changing and so is the adoption process. It isn’t enough to simply submit your papers with an adoption agency anymore. We are learning that networking with our friends and family members is one of the best ways to find our baby. We realize that this might seem a little bit pushy but there is nothing more important to us then building our family!

The secret of my bed skirt…

I recently made over my bed and I am so excited about it.

I am so excited to have a full – puddled – linen looking bed skirt. The secret is that the fabric is not even linen. I think it is 100% cotton but I don’t even know for sure because I got it at a discount fabric store (Home Fabrics) for $3 a yard AND it is the backside of the fabric.

After I washed it in hot water it just got nubbier. Yum. Is that a word? nubbier?

Do you want to see the right side of the fabric? I recovered this chair in it. Be patient with my weird exposures…I am still learning how to use my new camera.

Then I found some more nubby white cotton in my fabric stash and had big 28” pillows made with a 1 1/2” ruffle.

I already had the white quilt and duvet (which needs a cover…one day) as well as the Pottery Barn headboard (see my post about that here). Everything has been pre-washed in hot water which means no dry cleaning for me.

Isn’t that great texture!

I didn’t quite have enough fabric for the back side of the pillows so I found a different fabric for the back. Can you see the subtle paisley print on the other side (below)?

I probably won’t keep all four grain sack pillows on my bed. I will need to mix in some other pillows…but I wanted to show them to you because I bought a whole bunch at market (they were a steal) and I am going to be offering them to my readers. Aren’t they great?

The best thing about a full-linen-puddled bed skirt is that it looks glamorous even when the bed isn’t made. It’s kind of like a movie star with messy hair!

The Sweetest Little Girl’s Bedroom

In my next life, I would like to come back as an eleven year old girl in my client’s family so that I can have this bedroom! What a fun project! My client and I spent countless hours discussing her two girls and considering all of their needs for this bedroom. This was all done while they were at school, of course. When I finally met the girls they both gave me the biggest hug. They are both so sweet and grateful.

My client originally called me to help her figure out if there was room to add a walk-in closet to this attic space that was being transformed into a bedroom retreat. The room is large but the three dormer windows and staircase left a configuration that would not allow for a walk in closet.

Instead, I suggested we use an antique armoire for a closet and then add upholstered screens for privacy. The armoire was painted and glazed to add depth (see previous post here). Then we found matching dressers (from Bramble) that fit into the tight space on both ends of the armoire.

The screens were designed with a scroll on top that graduates with the ceiling line. Silver nail head trim finishes them off with a bit of glamour. The screens are upholstered with contrasting fabric on the back. I think they turned out GREAT!

My client purchased two day beds from The Pottery Barn. We painted the walls Sherwin Williams Silver Peony. One of the best decisions we made was to use the fabric from Heather Bailey’s Nicey Jane collection (see my pervious post here). Heather designs fabric for quilters/crafters. At about $9 a yard we were able to afford the scads of yardage that it took to pull off the many girly pillows that make this room so special. All of the pillows are reversible so the girls have 92 different combination possibilities (or so). Here is one:

In one of the dormers, we made a window seat. Love it!

In another dormer, we added a vanity (also from Bramble)

In the third dormer we had these gumdrop pillows made from an Amy Butler pattern.

We also had a built-in bookcase built to make this the reading nook.

Worth the wait…

About a year ago, I posted about this focal point in my house. I knew this spot needed the BEST possible solution because it is visible from all rooms in my house. It is off of the kitchen but also in the living room/ dining area. I was trying to make do with what I had but the nerdy little frames were just not cutting it for me.

I finally ordered this piece, then waited six months while it was on backorder. I am so happy that it finally arrived! It is from Dovetail (to the trade only).The dishes are a combo of tag sale treasures and Home Goods purchases.

This image from Cote De Texas planted the antique-dish-rack seed in my head a year and a half ago. That is how slow I am to decorate my own home! If only my budget could keep up with my plans.

My Favorite Design Surprise – Window Treatments

I love to watch my client’s reaction when they see draperies or roman shades in their home for the first time. They are usually amazed and delighted because they have underestimated the impact draperies or roman shades will have on a room in the first place. I just had draperies installed in my living room and now I am amazed and delighted every time I walk into the room.

The room feels more polished and complete with the new draperies. It also feels more cozy! I had the panels constructed so that the stacks don’t cover the windows, thus allowing the maximum amount of light during the day. You can also see my new light fixture over the dining room table on the right.

The fabric is a simple ticking stripe in a light blue-gray. I love it because the color is just right for the room but it is also simple enough that I can change things up if I want to. Who me? Want to change things? naaaaa

I had them made with a 5” puddle on the floor so that they blouse rather then hang straight.

Now I am on to the next layer – accessories! I would also like to refinish that coffee table in a grayer tone – however, I like it in this photo. What do you think?

My Client’s Living Room – After!

My client’s biggest complaint about their living room before was that no one ever spent time in there. During family gatherings everyone huddled in the kitchen and small family room, leaving the room next door empty and underused.

I could see why…First of all there was no focal point in the room. Second of all, the seating arrangement was awkward and uninviting. We spent the first few appointments working with templates like the one below. We moved the furniture around until we had optimized seating and created some wonderful focal points around the room.

Then we went to work selecting fabrics and furniture to fit their traditional yet comfortable style. This painting, by Kent Wallis, was already part of their collection, so we pulled colors and inspiration from it.

We recovered a couple of pieces. The fun chair below was one of the first pieces of furniture that my clients purchased when they were married over 37 years ago.

It is most defiantly everybody's favorite part of the room. The chair, draperies and pillows provided the punch of color and pattern that we needed. Next, we created two focal points on the wall below. The new English secretary is the first piece of furniture you see when you walk in the room. It is gorgeous and so is the new painting by Steve Songer.

The long narrow room was broken up into two areas. The piano area sits behind the sofa and across from the secretary. Another fabulous Kent Wallis painting was selected for this part of the room.

The Ralph Lauren Foo Dog lamps were the perfect finishing touch and my clients had to have the honeycomb bee box as well. We do live in the beehive state after all.

As their new furniture arrived, my client’s children (all grown and decorating their own homes now) would “dibs” the pieces they wanted to be passed down to them in the future. I started doing the same thing…and “dibsed” these Baker nesting tables!!!

It is all in good fun. But don't you think they are a must have??? My clients have happily reported that the room is finally getting the use it deserves. They admit that it isn't just when company is over either. They say that they are using the room more themselves.

For me design is about so much more then simply selecting beautiful furniture and finishes. It really is about improving the quality of life. For this client, that meant figuring out how to make the living room more inviting and serviceable for their family. Rather then adding on to their home – we found a way to make the square footage they already had a place that is fun, interesting, and accommodating to their lifestyle.

My Client’s Family Room; Before and After; Getting Proportion Right!

I am a little bit sad to post these photos because it marks the end of a really fun project. It all began with a one hour consultation about bathroom tile and the next thing you know we are redecorating the entire house. In the process we became great friends (my favorite part of the job) and I will really miss our weekly meetings.

This is how the family room looked BEFORE:

My clients were frustrated with the space because it was so cramped, especially when they had large family gatherings and everyone wanted to be in this one room. The space is long and narrow which called for a longer sofa and smaller scaled chairs (the opposite of what was there). So this is what we did!

By replacing the furniture with properly proportioned pieces, it made the room feel much bigger. We created additional seating on the sofa and ottoman, (which can be used in a pinch). We originally planned on two ottomans but my clients loved the rug so much they didn't want to cover it up. Adding three extra seating options was A LOT for this size space.

You can see the drapery fabric behind the sofa. It was the only element in the room that had to stay, which was fine with me because I love the classic Ralph Lauren print (it provided us with the perfect springboard for the project). The room is right off of the kitchen and breakfast area so it gets a lot of use. All of the fabrics that we selected are very grandchild friendly with high durability and camouflage factors. The herringbone fabric on the sofa is a Ralph Lauren fabric as well as the beautiful wool paisley pillow on the right. A Pindler fabric was selected for the club chairs and tangerine pillow.

Designer Floral Arrangements in a Pinch

While my sister was in town I talked her into helping me with a photo shoot. She is an awesome floral designer so I asked her to put together a few arrangements. Of course, it was totally last minute (because so was her trip). But look what she came up with…

And you will never believe, all of these flowers are from the grocery store.

OK – so we had to go to three different stores to find all of the right colors. But seriously, she is amazing and I am loving how she used leaves from my trees in the one above.

This one is in my kitchen and I hope it never dies.

For the love of quilting…

Each time someone in our family is expecting a baby we make a quilt. Even though the quilters in our family live in Utah, Texas and London we still manage to work together to create something special for each baby and expectant mother. We just started a new quilt for my sister-in-law, Lindsey, and her new baby boy due at the beginning of September.

Our process goes something like this: the pattern and fabrics are selected. My mom and I cut, package and deliver (via mail) the pieces to my sisters (and we keep some for ourselves) to be hand sewn into blocks. Then they are mailed back to my mom who sews the blocks together and prepares the pieced top for quilting.

Because these quilts are meant to be used by children we have them machine quilted by a professional. I know my Grandma June would be so disappointed. But that is how we do it and it is so much fun.

I am not a great quilter on my own but with the help of my mom and sisters I can contribute to something special and feel a great sense of accomplishment as a part of the team.

I really love to decorate with quilts as well. Everyone of the beds in my house is made with a quilt, I have quilts that hang over chairs and quilts that I only bring out at Christmas time. I use quilts as table cloths and one day I would love to recover a chair in a quilt.

I love that they can be feminine or masculine, old fashioned or modern. I love that they add color, pattern, and a story to every application.

Some of my favorite quilts have been purchased at yard sales others have been handmade by my sisters, mother or grandmother. Each one is unique and could never be replaced.

Quilting is a great summertime activity because it can easily be done in the car on a road trip, while sitting on a beach, or by the side of a pool (I am laughing as I write this because my sister Emily and I spent 5 hours in the pool today with our boys who are 2 and 4 years old – there is no way we could have quilted. LOL)

Anyway- it is great! I love it. Thanks to my mom and sisters for keeping this tradition going! We have three quilts to make this year. It is going to be great!

Cotswold-style cottage for sale in San Diego

When I saw this home listed on the California MLS, I felt like I had been there before. Then today, as I was going through my inspiration file I found this photo.

I am not sure what magazine it came from but that was it! Here is another photo of the house from the MLS.

I like that they painted the door red. The home has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and is 2,408 square feet. They are asking $1.5M.

At the time the magazine article was written the home owners had lived there for twenty years. It was a classic home-love-story. They had been watching and dreaming about the home for years and finally it up for sale. They purchased it and redid just about everything.

It makes me sad that they are selling it. Twenty-plus years in a home that you love is a long time. However, I am sure they are moving on to something else fabulous.

It was fun to learn more about this house from the MLS. I also learned a little bit about the roof (by googling) which looks like a thatched roof but might also be a Zook Roof- named after the architect who developed the technique, R. Harold Zook, from Illinois. His son Harold B. Zook also became an architect but moved to Southern California to set up shop…could there be a connection? Who knows? But I hope you enjoyed the tour.

Curb Appeal in Connecticut

I used to drive by this house every day in Avon, Connecticut. This photo was published by Country Living Magazine in June 2002. However, It really and truly looked like this every summer.

Doesn’t it just make you want to get window boxes? And move to Connecticut?

I love to garden and even though mine doesn't look ANYTHING like this one, It brings me just as much joy!. I hope your gardens are all coming up roses!

P.S. How do you think she waters those top ones?

Our Backyard Progress Report

Last September, I posted about my favorite privacy trees – Frons Fontaine Hornbeams. To this day it is one of my most visited posts – partly because a lot of people Google “best privacy trees” and my blog comes up on the second page. I guess it is true that good –well thought out titles on your blog posts can boost your readership. I doubt “Our Backyard Progress Report” will do much for my blogs’ popularity, but – oh well. This is what we have been up to at our house.

This weekend we planted 13 trees along our back fence in order to create a privacy screen and last month we installed the picket fence towards the back of our yard. The fence created a new dog run for Scout and Moose. Even though our dogs are really well behaved Labradoodles, they still reek havoc on the yard. So they will hang out back there when we are not playing with them or hanging out inside together.

Where are you going on vacation this summer?

Last year I thought it was so much fun to read about everyone's’ summer vacations on their blogs. It gave me lots of great ideas for future vacations to plan with my family.

I learned about the website, Home Away, that is super fun and easy to use to find vacation rental property all over the world. I used it to find this home which I booked today for our family vacation in central Idaho.

My family is full of outdoor enthusiasts (me included) who will enjoy the many activities near-by including: whitewater rafting, mountain biking, hiking, water skiing, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, and just hanging out together by the lake.

But I dog-eared this property for when I have a little bit bigger budget. OK a lot bigger budget!

It’s a classic “Something’s Gotta Give House” . Designed to look like the beautiful Hampton’s home that was featured in the movie, “Something’s Gotta Give”. I find it a little bit funny as I picture the architect, designer, and homeowner sitting down together pausing the DVD when a great shot of the home appears on screen. Of course, we have all done that, right.

And looking at luxury homes which have copied the movie set is getting as old as the blog posts about them. But alas…I thought I would share anyway.

It really is a beautiful home and I could imagine having a great time on vacation here. I would never have to leave.

This home is in Sun Valley, Idaho and boasts 10,000 square feet, 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. There is room for 15 of your favorite friends and family members. The rental fee is $15,000 a week or $30,000 a month. I loved this part “We supply Gilchrest & Soames Shampoos, Soaps, Lotions and Bath Salts from London for your pleasure and Sun Valley Robes for your comfort.” GOOD THING!!!

It sounds like the homeowners are gracious hosts! I cant wait to hear about your vacations this summer. Where are you going?

This is why I love to design…

One of my favorite quotes about interior design is by Windsor Smith. In an interview with Brooke Giannetti on her blog, Velvet and Linen, She said:

“We are the navigators of energy. Nobody really decorates because they love beautiful fabrics. It’s really about improving quality of life.”

This is so true. And the reason why I love to help people with their homes. There are so many possibilities within the space you already have that can improve the way you live. And it isn't just about making it pretty. To me a functional space is just as beautiful as a mountain of luxurious pillows.

When I designed my kitchen and island, I imagined it to be a gathering, eating, and art project creating place. It is so great when the house in my mind becomes reality and the kids are all gathered around the island doing a project!

I hope your summer is starting off great!

How to find great decorative books…

I happen to frequent this bookstore on a regular basis. I love to hunt down beautiful books for decorating…and sometimes they are great to read too ! If you have bookshelves to accessorize head to your local used book store - if you live near downtown Salt Lake City, try Sam Weller’s Bookstore.

Down in the basement you will find the bargain section.

And the hunt begins. Start by looking inside the dust jackets. You can usually see from the tops of the books what color is inside without having to open them up.

Then just start picking books that work with your color scheme. You can see I had fun finding the books to coordinate with this bird print. It is like picking flowers for a bouquet.

I especially like two toned books and books with a little something that is interesting about them. Like the top one with the tree clip art. I just love that one.

I also look for oversized books, weathered books, linen colored, and matching books! If you don't have bookshelves there are lots of great places to display books. I found this ladder at the Brimfield Antique Market (wishing I was there now!)

If you do go to Sam Wellers bring a suitcase on rollers. Seriously, there is no parking and you might have to walk a block or two!

If you are still reading this blog…THANK YOU!! I had to take a little break. I was all wrapped up with a speaking engagement for my church and friends came in from out of town. I really needed to recharge my batteries and get refocused after all the fun.

Three of my favorite girlfriends in the world came into town for my speaking engagement and we turned it into a little girls getaway. On Saturday, we took a stroll down Park City’s main street just to enjoy the great art galleries. And it really did look like that with all the snow IN MAY!!! Only in Utah. I was finally able see the beautiful artwork inside the Montgomery-Lee gallery, they represent some great artists.

These paintings are by Steve Songer, a local Utah artist. My client purchased one a while back and I have been in love ever since.

I wish you could see them in person because these photos don't do them justice. There is peacefulness to his work. They are the type of paintings that are easy to have in a room- the subtle colors and soft lines are relaxing not overpowering.

The other artist that I truly loved was Jared Sanders, also from Utah. He paints the most incredible barns.

These paintings are big and their vivid colors really make a statement. There is something so friendly and appealing about a barn? What is it?

The one above is sold…didn't they know it was meant for my house?

Sneak Peak – Sweetest Little Girl’s Bedroom

Well- it has been a couple of months since I posted the inspiration photos for my client’s little girl’s bedroom. I changed the title to read the sweetest little girls bedroom because the girls that will be sharing this darling room are anything but sassy- they are just the sweetest girls and so are their parents.

The pieces for this room are starting to come together so I couldn’t help but post a few pictures of the focal point of the room…this gorgeous French armoire. We found it online at Mr. Beasley’s Antiques in Riverside California.

Then Todd, at Cottage Charm Furniture, did a remarkable job on the finish which is antique white with a light brown glaze.

I can’t wait to show you the final photos! Wouldn't you have loved such a special room as a child?

Diamond Baretta Designs

I learn so much through blogging! Don’t you? This week I came across a link to Diamond Baretta Design. You know how you follow a link to a link to a link? Well, that is what a did and I was so excited when I saw these photos.

I have had an article about one of the homes they designed in Connecticut (probably from Country Living) in my inspiration book forever.

You can imagine my delight when I saw more images from their portfolio. What struck me the first time I discovered Diamond Baretta seemed to echo through all of their work.

First, their interpretation of a traditional New England look is so much fun and playful. It is like they have no fear when using color and pattern.

Second, all of their rugs are out-of-this-world. I remember looking up the source for the rug in the Country Living Magazine years ago and discovering that it was custom. I thought, can you do that? LOL. Seriously, look closely at every room.

Third, don’t miss the wallpaper and ceiling treatments. Look how they bring every vault to LIFE.

Fourth, The quilts!!! In my old inspiration photos they even had upholstered a wing back chair in a quilt. I am a quilter, my mom is a quilter and my aunts, cousins and grandma are quilters too. I love displaying treasured family heirlooms in my home.

Wouldn't you love to have a custom rug created for your home? I would.

How to find furniture that tells a story…

Last week I picked up some great prints at the Walter Larson Antiques show. They will be framed and hung in my four-year-old son’s room which is loosely themed “adventure”. I love their story-book quality and all of the motion in the artwork.

The Walter Larson Antiques Show is about the best that we have here in Salt Lake City, but it is mostly grannies attic type shopping.

It makes me so sad every time I go just because I know what I am missing out on. I used to ride my bike to the Farmington Antiques Weekend (which is by far my favorite show).

Plus, I have shopped Round Top and Brimfield to my hearts content.

But the prints are great, right? This trunk is another piece in my son’s room.

I can’t thank my mom enough for letting me use it. I love the trunk but I also love that my mom negotiated to purchase it out of the Nautica store display window at Fashion Island, for my brother’s room when we were kids. She is hilarious!

We read a lot of stories at our house. I thought this book rack would help me keep them picked up but I also love how much color and life it adds to the room.

So now I am on a hunt for a great map to frame and a new dresser. If you have any suggestions for a great map source please send it my way. Of course I am looking for something big, colorful and vintage!

If you are looking for great furniture and accessories, the kind that tell a story, you have to look beyond the traditional sources. You might want to check out a silly antiques show, your mother’s attic, or a store display window. You never know what you are going to find.

Do you ever have buyers remorse?

I always try to prepare my clients when something new arrives at their home, especially when the room is being installed piece by piece rather then all at once. Just seeing something new in a space can be uncomfortable and if the room is not yet complete – the new items might look out of place. Yikes! and they have spent so much money! (that is what they are thinking of course)! But you have to remember that context is everything – right Maria.

When a new light fixture arrived at my house last week, I had to talk myself out of having buyers remorse and figure out why the lantern looked so huge. Here is it (not yet installed) from Ballard Designs.

And the funny thing was that it looked like the right size from every angle except this one. Can you figure out why?

My beautiful grandfather clock which was placed behind it is exactly the same shape but drastically under-scale which made the light fixture look so big.

So we moved the clock and now what do you think? The lantern is perfect, right! (or do you think I should take it back? JK).

Sidenote- the clock was a graduation gift to my husband from his parents. His father built it about 30 years ago when he couldn’t afford a clock that he saw in an interior designer’s showroom. I never saw the original but I can’t believe there is a better clock out there and I think I scored even though the gift was for my husband.

Do you want a bigger kitchen?

I recently met Steve Tiek, of Tiek Built Homes, though a mutual friend. It turns out we have a lot in common. We both live along the Wasatch Front here in Utah and we both love timeless architecture, functional spaces, and detailed craftsmanship. He is a general contractor with a great eye for design. Turns out we are both big fans of Benjamin Blackwelder Cabinetry as well, see my post here and here.

Steve and Benjamin recently completed this stunning kitchen remodel. (All photos are posted with permission from Steve). Here is a photo of this space before. SMALL!

As you can see they removed the wall between the kitchen and the rarely-used-formal-dining-room in order to accommodate a bigger kitchen. The family now uses the large kitchen and adjoining eating area as the main dinning/entertaining space.

If you are tight on space, this is a great solution, since most parties gravitate into the kitchen anyway and most family meals are served in the kitchen eating area, why not eliminate the dining room?

This is the old formal dining room space. They left the large window in place which, Steve pointed out, let in a ton of light but also eliminated awkward corner cabinets. I love it!

What a beautiful place to stand and do dishes. I love that they left space between the cabinets and the window for the great light fixtures. The black granite looks like it is honed which makes it look a lot like soapstone (but with out the bigger pricetag)

Steve explained that they wanted to have two focal points, the sink and the range/hood. But since the two were a bit far apart, the prep sink was added in the island.

Ahhh, the coveted island. You just gotta have one. There is nothing like sitting your little kids up to the bar and feeding them grilled cheese sandwiches. Because this space is narrow, Steve and Ben, came up with this zig, zag shape that not only adds interest to the room, but accommodates two kiddos and a prep sink. It is marvelous.

How to stage your home for sale

Lately I have been really busy working with clients on such fun projects! It is great. The best part about interior design is connecting with wonderful people! Last week, I helped a client accessorize and stage her Salt Lake City/Sugarhouse home to sell.

But honestly, I hardly did a thing. She already had the place looking like it was ready for a magazine shoot.

As you can see, my client has perfected this home up to the very last layer. Every wall has a unique and beautifully selected piece of art. Every table is adored with thoughtful goodies…and that is why she has to move. Some people have to always have a project, right?

It is a good thing that I am only to the first layer of my home (rugs and window treatments). That means I will be able to stay here a long long time.

Wouldn’t you love to move into this lovely home? I can truly say there isn’t a project left to be done. It is perfection.

One suggestion I did make was to take these great macro shots. I think the details of a home really give it atmosphere. It helps that my client is also an awesome photographer.

What is Slipcovered, Washable, and Fabulous?

Everything at Quatrine Home. (My four-year-old has recently been explaining things to me in riddles. It is so cute).

On a recent trip, I finally got to go into a Quatrine Home store. My sister, who lives in Dallas, has been telling me about it forever and now I know why. All of their furniture is slipcovered and machine washable and really beautiful. I know it seems that slipcovered furniture is always washable but it is not so. Many pieces are dry clean only.

Some of my favorite pieces at Quatrine Home were the pillows;all covered in thick chunky linen with the most adorable ruffles in contrasting colors.

I also loved the many cotton and linen fabrics that they pre-wash to make amazing slipcovers. The lavender cotton velvet was to die for.

Does your home have good bones?

I create my own homes one layer at a time. It surprises some people that even though I have lived here for 18 months, I still don’t have pictures hanging on my walls or even an accessory to speak of. I am not to that layer yet and for some reason it just doesn't feel right to gussy up the tables when the rugs are all wrong. I like nothing more then to be able to start a home from scratch and complete it one perfect layer at a time.

The truth is that most homes develop over time. Very few of us can afford to move into a new home with new furnishings and accessories all at once. The first layers of a home are so important because they lay the foundation for what is to come.

I love this home showcased on Willow Decor. First of all, it is in Alpine, Utah, which is my neck of the woods. Second of all, it has such great bones.

Can you believe this view? Location is the very fist layer of your home. This is the one thing you can’t change!!! It dictates so much about what your home can and will become. A great neighborhood, the perfect setting, mature trees, and spectacular views all contribute to the ambiance of your home. The surrounding homes also play an important roll in how big or small your home can become and the style that will work within your neighborhood.

Your floor plan is the next layer – A good floor plan is flexible, and reflects the way you want to live. It works as well for 2 people as it does for 20. Although it is hard to see from these pictures, this home appears to have a wonderful flow and very practical spaces. Most importantly, a good floor plan has a seamless connection to the outdoors. Wouldn’t you love to watch the sun rise on this balcony?

Fixtures make up the third layer – this includes everything that is bolted onto the house. Flooring, trim work, light fixtures, cabinets, countertops, plumbing fixtures, appliances, railings, fireplaces, …I am sure I forgot something.

I love the choices this homeowner made. You can see how much thought and detail they put into this house from the hardwood floors to the reclaimed beams and coffered ceilings. It is so beautiful – even without a single piece of furniture, accessory or picture on the wall.

This is what “good bones” look like to me. The cabinets are to die for. Apparently the homeowner is a cabinet maker.

Las Vegas Furniture Market recap…part 2

As I mentioned in my last post, I spent last week in Las Vegas at the Furniture Market. It was so much fun. We had a long list of showrooms that we wanted to go to – but we also loved the unexpected new names and no names.

Company C and Dash and Albert were on the list of showrooms I was looking forward to visiting. Who says I don’t like color? The ottoman above and rug below were purchased for clients!!! I can’t wait to see them in their homes.

I loved this indoor/outdoor rug from the Rug Market…still looking for a spot for it.

Like I said – the small unknown temporary booths were some of the best. I loved everything in this one…

We loved shopping in the accessory showrooms as well. The way this showroom was styled was fabulous. Look at how interesting and dynamic this arrangement is…and the fact that it is done all in neutrals just goes to show how important texture, scale, and tone are when accessorizing.

The Las Vegas Furniture Market recap…part 1

I spent last week in Las Vegas at the Furniture Market. It was so much fun. One of the highlights of the trip was getting to know my new BFF, Caitlin Creer, fellow decorator, blogger, and mom. Caitlin and I met a month ago for the first time and the next thing I know we are on an airplane together. Well, at first we were stranded in an airport for 7 hours, then we were on an airplane together, but whatever, we made it to the show and had a blast.

Some designers snub their noses at the Las Vegas Market. As the newest furniture market in the country, it has taken a while for it to gain momentum and many of the biggest names in furniture are still hold outs and not attending. But seriously, I can’t imagine anyone going to this show and being disappointed. We had a long list of showrooms that we wanted to go to – but our favorites were the unexpected new names that we had never heard of.

Aren’t these the light fixtures from Barreveld the greatest!!!

I met with the Taylor Scott company– the king of slipcovered furniture. He has the greatest line of beautiful pieces and every single one of his fabrics is richly textured, soft and washable! I just couldn’t get enough.

I couldn’t be more excited about this dish rack that found at Dovetail. I have been hunting one down ever since I saw something similar in a home designed by Ginger Barber featured on Cote De Texas. I never thought I would find something that I like as much as the original pictured below (probably an antique). But I did!!

The showroom Go Home was so much fun. And I was sure I had seen it posted on Brooke’s blog a while back (Velvet and Linen).

We chatted with the product designer for a while and explained the world of design blogs to him. I even showed him Velvet and Linen so that he could see that he had been featured there!

There is nothing like a great shopping trip to invigorate your mind and creativity.

There was so much to see and, of course, Caitlin and I came up with 1000 new projects for ourselves and 1000 new ideas for our clients. If you are interested in some new ideas for your home, please contact me for a consultation. I would love to help.

Inspiration for a sassy girls bedroom

I am currently working with a client who wants to create a fun sassy girls retreat in the attic rooms of her Victorian home. How lucky is that? I thought that I would share some of our inspiration for the room….

This is a photo of fabric designer, Heather Bailey’s, booth at the most recent quilt market. It won best booth, not surprised. I loved the way she paired her very feminine, vintage, flirty prints with the white French settee covered in a stone gray fabric. I couldn’t tell if it was linen, cotton, velvet? But it is stunning either way.

Her newest fabric line is called Nicey Jane, so cute! I ordered the samples and now I have to narrow down our options from 40 fabulous prints to five or six. It will be tough. They are all so cute. We are going to use the this fabric for the pillows and canopies on the beds. The sheets and comforters will be a solid color, hopefully gray if we can find it and it works. However, it could also be lime green, pink or lavender. Oh the options!!!

We will be looking for a French wardrobe piece like this one from Village Chic in the UK. We considered building a walk-in-closet, but opted for a the wardrobe and privacy screens instead. The attic has lots of fun angels in the ceiling from the roofline – adding walls would have taken away from the charm of the room.

I love the nail head trim and the curves at the top of this privacy screen. We will probably choose an accent color for ours.

I can’t wait to show you how it all turns out!

To splurge or save? A Dining Room Before and After.

I posted the question a while back…Is it better to wait, save your money, and splurge on one fabulous item at a time; or decorate on a dime and find creative ways to furnish your home without spending a lot of money? I came to the conclusion that a well designed home must carefully balance the two.

This is where my client and I began almost exactly a year ago. See how we transformed her dining room by splurging on some things and saving on others.

Before:

My client loves to decorate and has a charming cape cod home. She called me to help her pick paint colors. Of course we didn’t stop there, a couple of months later she was ready for the next layer. In an email she said that she hated the window treatments (2”blinds) and that she needed some color, personality and pattern on her walls. I couldn’t wait to get to our appointment to recommend ROMAN SHADES – which would solve all of her problems and be the perfect window treatment in her kitchen, family room, dining room and study.

So this is where we splurged…Custom Roman Shades were made for her dining room and study. The windows were cased with beautiful white trim.

We searched and searched for the perfect fabric. At one point a sample of Kelly Wearstler’s Imperial Trellis fabric came home with us. It was so perfect except for one thing, the price tag!!!! So we went back to the showroom and found this trellis fabric from Pindler at a fraction of the price. We loved it just as much.

This is where we saved: Less expensive designer fabric for the custom roman shades.

In the meantime, my client found the dining table at Down East Home, here in Salt Lake City (our Pottery Barn outlet) and the two additional captains chairs at the Sundance Catalogue outlet. The rug and four parsons chairs are from the previous furniture arrangement.

Another place we saved: dining table and two captains chairs found at local outlet.

Another problem area in my client’s home was this “drop zone”. These French doors serve as the back door to the home and all of the coats, hats, shoes, and backpacks were becoming an organizational nightmare.

So she splurged on built-in cabinetry which was ordered to fill the specific needs of this space and my client says that it was the best design decision she ever made. Shoes, hats, mittens, and toys go in the bottom drawers, while coats and backpacks fill the lockers. Good design is usually as functional as it is beautiful and this built-in is a perfect example!

Another place we saved: You can see the new white roman shades that were purchased from the pottery barn for her kitchen/family room area. This was a great decision because we were going to use a white in-expensive fabric for the custom shades in here anyway. The quality and fit were a bit of a compromise but don’t they look great??

Custom white kitchen makeover before and after!

Oh how I love your emails and comments! Thanks to everyone who reads, comments, and sends emails. Melissa is a great friend of mine from Connecticut. We both live in Utah now but only see each other on rare occasions, life! Melissa and I had a fun time decorating our townhouses together in Connecticut and harvesting our hydrangeas each fall for arrangements. I was happy to see from a photo on her blog that she has planted a pee gee limelight hydrangea in her new yard. I have one too!

Melissa has been been out house hunting and sent me an email explaining that while she loved the kitchen in this house….

She made on offer on the house with the kitchen below. She wanted to know how to accomplish the look of the home above with what she already had….It is interesting to think that these two kitchens started out exactly the same!

While she wasn’t really asking me about the kitchen, I wanted to point out the brilliant changes that the owner/designer of the white kitchen made to totally change the look of the kitchen from “standard builder issue” to a Christopher Peacock inspired look.

No. 1 – Obviously, the owner/designer painted the cabinets white. I have used every method under the sun to paint cabinets. If you can afford it, hire a cabinet company to do the job. The paint they use is the most durable and will hold up better then what you or your painter will use. If that is too expensive, spray paint them yourself. BUT follow these instructions carefully – not all white spray paint is created equal. You must use the right color white. Plain old bright white will look cheep or like the cabinets have only been primed. I just spray painted all of my laundry room cabinets white and the result is awesome! I was shocked at how professional they look.

I used Krylon Dover White in a gloss finish. Dover white is a little bit creamy without being too creamy. It is also the exact color of all the trim on my house (Sherwin Williams Dover White) so I didn’t have to have the spray paint custom mixed. If Dover White is not the right white for you, Sherwin Williams will make spray paint in custom colors. So pick a yummy white and go for it! I also love Shoji White by Sherwin Williams. (I only lightly sanded the cabinets and then sprayed away! No primer needed.)

No. 2 – Two schoolhouse light pendants replaced the existing light fixture. I found this one for $126.00 on Amazon.com.

No 3. I love the creativity where the counter tops are concerned. The island has been redone in carrera white marble 12X12 tiles. Obviously marble slab tops were not in the budget – but this owner/designer did not let that stop her. Tile counter tops can be done fairly easily by yourself thus cutting the costs tremendously. In the process they enlarged the island so that there is seating on two sides rather then just one- smart!

No. 4 The rest of the counter tops are plain white ceramic tiles with a fabulous trim piece for the bullnose. And the backsplash is done in good old white subway tiles. I really like the way they used the trim piece here.

No. 5 Four of the cabinets doors have been turned into glass fronts. It looks like they just took the cabinet panel out and had a piece of glass made to fit. It really adds to the open airy feeling of the white kitchen and also gives a nice focal point to the room. Looks like this owner/designer also has a thing for peegee lime light hydrangeas. We must all be kindred spirits.

No. 6 The microwave has been removed and a new stainless steel hood has taken it’s place. So much better!!! Again the focal point is no longer a microwave but four accessorized glass front cabinets and a stainless steal hood. Not bad.

No. 7 The panel above the cabinets has been removed giving the room a more spacious open feeling.

No. 8 The walls were painted a wonderful pale green color that compliments all of the green dishes. And the pantry door was given wider trim as well as new glass inside.

No. 9 Hardware has been added to the cabinets! I almost forgot to point that out. They are little crystal knobs and pulls.

During the holidays I was able to see so many of my favorite people! It was the best. Thanks Gayla for hosting me at your fabulous ranch retreat. We have been friends for 10 years and together we have helped each other buy, build, and furnish five homes between us. Our shopping adventures have taken us from Brimfield Massachusetts, to High Point North Carolina, and to New York City, just to name a few. When we get together we love to talk design. I have learned so much from her over the years.

Galya mentioned that she was on the hunt for a certain fabric.

Something that would blend her brown leather sofas with the sea salt blues and greens in the rest of her home.

The next day my first issue of Coastal Living showed up and inside I saw this fabulous home designed by Cathy Chapman of Houston Texas.

I love the fabrics that she used which…blend the brown sofas into the sea salt blues and greens in the home.

I knew Galya would love them but I also thought you might too.

Unfortunately the sources were a little bit vague so I am still tracking down the actual fabrics. But having a picture makes it so much easier. Happy New Year Gayla! It was great to see you.

Christmas ornament ball wreath – It’s easy

Now that my front door is green, my old standby evergreen Christmas wreath just blends in. I found this great Christmas ornament ball wreath, here, here, here and here.

It was so easy….

All you need is a wire hanger, 80 ornaments, some pliers, hot glue, and ribbon. Just bend the hanger into a nice circle and string the ornaments onto the wire.Eddie Ross says that you need to hot glue the ornaments onto their ends but the ornaments I got from Target ($20) stayed on really well.

I pulled about six of them off so that I could clasp the ends of the hanger together, then I hot glued those back into their tops. Altogether – this took about 20 minutes and my son loved helping !

Texture makes a neutral color palate more interesting

I am bragging today…

I went to the Sundance Catalogue Outlet yesterday to see if they had good sweaters, they did. But while I was there I spotted these wicker parsons chairs. I had a hunch they would be showing up at the outlet soon because they were on sale in the catalogue for a couple of weeks and then gone. I promised myself that if I ever saw them at the outlet I would buy them – without debating. They were a steal of a deal and I am so excited because they are the perfect thing for my dining room.

You can see why I wanted them so badly- with such a neutral color palate I need the texture to keep it from becoming stale and boring. They also provide a nice contrast to my existing dark table. I still need a light fixture and something on the wall but one thing at a time.

I think a lot of people get side tracked when their neutral color palate is not working. They think that they need color when what they really need is texture. Because it absorbs and reflects light in different ways, using many textures in a room can have the same effect as using many colors. It is just a more subtle way to achieve interest.

Christmas Photo Advent Calendar Part 2

I have been making these photo advent calendars for YEARS now. They are just too much fun! It seems like just when I have given one to every single person I know…the photos need to be updated and the colors could use some rethinking.

In the past the photo tiles have had eyelets that hang on little nails.

This year I magnetized them by hot gluing a super-mini super-strong magnet to the front of each tile. Everyone on my list already had a magnet board that could play double duty as an advent calendar. It made shipping more simple and cheaper.

TIP - It helps when your family has been all together for a reunion or vacation AND you took great photos. It was so nice to have the photos on hand and not have to track pictures of everyone down and beg people to send me photos.

If you are interested in making your own advent calendar, all you need to do is purchase mat board at a frame supply store and have it cut into 25 - 3X3 squares. I usually have the frame supply store to cut the boards into 12X12 pieces and then take those pieces to FedEx/Kinko's to have them cut into the 3X3 squares. The frame shops usually charge more per cut.

Paperwhites – the best $2 gift ever

My mom, speaking of Christmas gifts and the economy as we leave a sale on Black Friday, “I guess the trick this year will be to give gifts that cost less but look like more?”

Me, thinking

Me, “No I think this year actually giving less is better. Right now people appreciate simplicity and don’t want to feel like they need to reciprocate in a big way or at all.”

Here is what I am giving some of my girlfriends and neighbors this year and I am not embarrassed to say that they cost less then $2 each.

I googled to see when I should plant my paperwhite bulbs to have them blooming right at Christmas time. It said six weeks (so I planted them in mid-November). But now some of them are getting ready to bloom. So I would say PLANT NOW for best results. It is not too late!!

I planted them in all sorts of containers for my Christmas decorating. Just whatever I had on hand. Today I planted some new ones for gifts…Here is how I did it.

I purchased these little tumblers from Ikea for 29 cents each. They are the perfect size for one single bulb and there are no drain holes (important!).

I filled each pot half way with orchid bark. You can also use rocks. The key is that the bulb needs to sit on something so the roots can find their way down to the water.

The bulbs were about a dollar each at my local Smith’s Market Place. (kind of like a scaled down Target). Ten came together in a nifty canvas bag. I am stoked about the bag – now I have three.

Put the bulb on top of the bark and add water. Fill the water just to the bottom of the bulb so the roots will start to grow. Remember to keep watering them but don’t submerge the bulb- just water the roots.

Tend them for the next couple of weeks the end result should be something like this….

Childproof decorating with seagrass rugs

My puppy Moose - one year ago – he looks so innocent here

A year ago I was given three rugs; two seagrass and one sisal. We had just moved into our home and I wasn’t sure how I was going to cover the hardwood floors in the living room, dinning room, and family room. We also welcomed a new puppy into our family and began potty training him AND my son at the same time. Translation – these rugs would really be pushed to their limits. Two big dogs, one busy boy and muddy unfinished landscaping was a recipe for disaster so you can see why I was grateful for the free trail rugs.

After a year of abuse I have come to one conclusion.

SEAGRASS ROCKS!

I have to admit that Joni’s blog post on Cote de Texas and Lauren’s post on Pure Style Home really helped me sort things out. Not all natural fiber rugs are created equal. My free sisal rug has absorbed every liquid that it has come into contact with. I won’t go into details here – you can use your imagination. This includes cleaning supplies.

Seagrass repels moisture, which means that even a spilled red slurpie won’t soak in while you grab a paper towel; dried applesauce can be vacuumed; and everyday dirt won’t show up on the bumpy textured surface. There is only one thing I don’t like about my rugs and that is the 100% cotton fabric borders. They looked dirty the day they entered my house, and I am not going to scrub my fabric borders, let’s just be honest.

So now I am about to order wall-to-wall seagrass for my dining room and living room, but am also considering mountain grass, which is a little bit softer then seagrass. I have a sample here and it does feel softer when I test it out against the seagrass. Either way, I don’t think I could find a better looking child and pet friendly floor covering! Can’t wait.

The Dotted Line Designs – Christmas and Holiday Cards

You may have noticed my new blog header. It was well overdue, I know. Thanks to Emily Asay, of the Dotted Line Designs, for creating such a perfect design for me. I really love the way blogging forces you to think about what your doing and writing and WHY! Designing a graphic for the header was no exception. Emily was great at helping me translate my blogging aspirations into a graphic that represents my style and goals. Plus she has great taste and can design just about anything. Harman Wilde Interior Design – Style in Salt Lake City

I am really excited to share this home with you. It is one of my favorites and was published in the Utah Style and Design Spring 2009 issue. It was decorated by the Harman Wilde Interior Design Team, Sue Harman and Jason Wilde. Be sure to check out their website to see more amazing spaces.

AFTER! Quaint, charming, and full of character. Wouldn’t we all love a front porch like this one. Talk about curb appeal!

You can see how much potential this home had from the beginning!

What I love…It has a playful mix of pattern, texture, and color that manages a sophisticated and relaxing feel at the same time. I also like the way they paired geometrics, like the Kelly Wearstler Imperial Trellis fabric on the roman shades, with florals and stripes on the chairs and sofa.

Ahhhhh, a beautiful white kitchen with limestone countertops and simple lines. Perfection. The top halves of the cabinet doors look like true-divided glass which gives a nice open feeling to the room. But since they left 3/4 of the cabinets out of sight – the homeowner has more storage space and less display space. I would like that.

While I don’t know the exact square footage, I think that this “cottage” it is much bigger then it looks. Are we starting to see a trend away from bigger open floor plans and toward smaller more intimate spaces?

This master bathroom is a nice departure from the all white spaces we are seeing so often these days. Don’t get me wrong, I love them too! But I could really go for this fun combination of granite and glass hexagonal tiles.

These great bedrooms have lots of charm and just the right amount of color, pattern and texture!

I left the best for last. This home really has everything. I love their updated fresh take on cottage style. What did you think?

To splurge or save?

I find myself constantly jumping between two decorating camps. I can’t decide if I am the girl who waits, saves her money, and splurges on one fabulous item at a time; or the girl who can decorate on a dime and finds creative ways to furnish her home without spending a lot of money. I certainly have a ton respect for talented decorators on both sides but I am not really sure where I belong these days.

In the past, I have definitely been the girl who can decorate on a dime. Sometimes there really isn’t a choice.

Country Living

I have done it all from making my own willow furniture, lamps and frames; sanding furniture down to the bare wood and restraining; scouring yard sales and picking things up off the side of the road; reupholstering - ok really I was stapling fabric; and sewing my own slipcovers.

Certainly, I am not above doing any of those projects and still do many of them today (except stapling or gluing fabric, yikes!) .

I was recently introduced to these fantastic blogs that have tons of inspiration for the girl wants to design on a dime.

Check out the Nesting Place. She says that “it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful” and tells all about her window mistreatments. LOL.

Check out Our Suburban Cottage for great ideas and inspiration. AnNicole has a lot of good old fashion grit and will stop at nothing to make her home decorating dreams come true.

Also – don’t miss Clover Lane and how she furnished her house without spending a ton! She painted this dining room set, the walls and reupholstered the chairs all in a week.

It looks beautiful!

The problem is that even “on a dime” projects cost money and time. You can not decorate for free and I am feeling like sometimes it is better to just wait and put the money you would have spent on a DIY project towards something that you really want.

I guess it is the whole splurge versus save debate and what is the answer???

I am learning that you have to have a little bit of both in your home. The magic is in the mix.

Let’s face it – styles change. What is new and fresh today will become dated and passé tomorrow. Things That Inspire wrote a great post, this week, about Trendy elements that scream 2000s. The post was thought provoking and so were the comments that followed. It made me think, “what is timeless?” and “how can I ensure that my designs stand the test of time?”

For many people it is scary to embark on the world of interior design – whether they are building, remodeling or simply purchasing a new sofa – the fear of making a mistake can be paralyzing. But what fun is that? A well designed home is not afraid of taking risks. That is rule #1. So take a deep breath – “it is just paint it is just fabric so relax and have fun” quote by Andrea Lambert in Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion.

I dug deep into my files to find a home that I think is timeless. It was published nine years ago (that is forever in the design world!!) in Country Home Magazine September 2000. It was the home of designer, Ginger Barber. I also came up with some ideas about what a well designed home should incorporate. See what you think!

#2- A well designed home is authentic – not false or copied; genuine; real.

#3 A well designed home is craftmanship – Quality pieces will add depth and character to a room. Antiques create an authentic feel and have usually stood the test of time in quality and design.

#4- A well designed home is flexible and functional- If you haven’t already read the Cote de Texas post about Ginger Barber’s two more recent homes. Click here. You will see many of the same pieces of furniture travel from home to home. Point made!

#5- A well designed home is simple – Leonardo de Vinci said, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication". I agree.

#6- It is all in the details- It is the texture of a basket, the motion in a painting, or just the right shade of yellow. But the details make all the difference, don’t you think?

Ann-Marie Barton - Style in Salt Lake City

Last week I went to Jeni Goichnour's Art Open House which was held at the Holladay Gardens Condominiums model unit. The open house was great and Jeni's collection of painted gourds and goodies is always so much fun. Of course, I was totally distracted by the beautifully decorated condo by interior designer, Ann-Marie Barton. I quickly went home and looked the property up on the MLS. All photos are from the MLS, however, the listing is currently expired???

The floor plan is perfection. At 1800 square feet it really lives large and packs a punch in all the right areas (kitchen, master suite, laundry room and study)

I love the hood, and milky white cabinets, subway tile and tropical brown granite countertops. The commercial grade range is my personal favorite brand - Decor (it is what I have in my home too, I will have to tell you about the digital meat probe later- it is the best!)

These photos do not do that white linen slipcoverd sofa justice. It is beautiful - it looks a lot like the furniture by Giannetti Home - which I adore.

The colors in the home are a soft mix of butter and sea salt blue. I wish there was a picture of the head board and pillows that Ann-Marie picked out for this space.

I like the mix of natural stone and subway tile. In the other bathroom (not pictured), the walls of the shower are white subway tile and the floors are slate. I love all-white spaces but natural stone on the floor (limestone, slate and some travertine) hides a lot of dirt and warms up a space.

I love this office. Say good-bye to expensive cherry wood cabinets. This space is more feminine and flexible. Beautiful! If you would like to see more of Ann-Marie's work click here.

How to find a home with a ton of potential!

It doesn't matter whether it is a "buyer's market" or a "seller's market" - there are always great homes available for sale. If you are looking for a home with a ton of potential here are some tips:

1586 E. Downington Ave. Salt Lake City, Utah $329,000

Do: Look for a home in the best neighborhood that you can afford. You don't want to find out later that the renovations you have planned will make your home the most expensive one on the street. It makes resale difficult plus your neighbors will be jealous:).

Don't: Overspend on the price of the home. Leave yourself some wiggle room for renovations and furniture, even if they are planned for the future. If your are maxed out with house payments it doesn't matter how much potential the house has - your stuck with it the way it is. Maria Killam just wrote a great post about this here.

1874 Atkin Ave. Salt Lake City, Utah $363,000

Do: Work with an experienced Realtor who knows the market in your area like the back of her hand and can help you negotiate the best possible deal.

Don't: Get emotionally attached to a home until you are sure the numbers fit your budget. Try to be practical first. Then start arranging furniture in your head.

1606 S. Main Street. Salt Lake City, Utah $349,899

Do:Make a plan now. Even if you won't be making any changes before you move in to your new home, thinking it completely through now will save you so much heartbreak later. Put together a "real" budget that includes actual bids before you close the deal.

Do: Watch out for things that will suck your money and leave you nothing for fun things like a great looking front door. You should have an experienced General Contractor go through the project with you before you buy. A good one will foresee problems and expenses that might save you from making a big mistake.

4600 Wellington Street, Salt Lake City, Utah $274,950

Don't: Assume that a good floor plan is everything. I loved my home's floor plan and basically kept it the same - But it didn't matter because I replaced every single wall in the house (in order to accommodate new electrical, plumbing, and drywall). In the end the floor plan could have been a mess and it wouldn't have made a bit of difference.

Do: Consult an Interior Designer about space planning and prioritizing. A good one will be able to see how a space should flow and how to maximize the homes potential when you renovate.

Make a BIG difference in your home with little details.

When we first walked into the Cannon's home, everyone asked what should be done with the large map of Nevada on the back wall of the front entry LOL.

You can see that a few little details; some fabulous architectural trim, wood capped stairs and a new color scheme made a big difference. Tadaaa! Here is how...

1. Architectural Trim is relatively inexpensive and easy to install - however, if you don't have experience working with it you will want to hire a design professional to help you with a plan. Take one look at a trim catalogue and you will see what I am talking about. There are a thousand choices and it is hard to tell how a little sample will actually look on the wall and work together with the other pieces. The details are so important! This simple design required several different trim pieces and I actually stayed on location as the finish carpenter installed it (making them redo a few things as they went).

2. Wood Capped Stairs - obviously we were not going to leave the wrapped carpet going down the stairs in the foyer! Especially since the Cannons were installing hardwood floors throughout the entire main floor of the house. The wood end caps give the room a more formal and clean appearance. I mentioned before that the previous owners loved carpet- The whole house was wall to wall - even the kitchen and bathrooms YUCK! Covering the entire stair with wood can be very expensive, and if it is in the budget, would be my first choice. Capping only the sides saved some money and still had the effect we were going for.

3. Paint - Painting the trim white brightened up the room and makes a big impact. However, one thing you might not be able to see is that we darkened up the wood on the banister as well. We saved a lot of money by keeping the existing banister and by having our painter rub a dark glaze on the existing finish. It took the yellow undertones out of the finish and added a deep rich brown hue to tie in the new hardwood floors. So much less expensive then sanding it down and refinishing or replacing it all together! I also love the light fixture that the Cannon's picked out.

Cannon's Kitchen Before and After Photos

This home was such a joy to transform thanks to the awesome team that was assembled to bring this family's dream to reality. The collaboration included Realtor- Nancy Little (my mother), General Contractor - Ron Christensen (my father-in-law), Interior Designer -Bethany Christensen (me), and the homeowners.

The Cannons wanted a fresh white kitchen that was kid friendly, warm and welcoming. We started by enlarging the space, extending the bay window and knocking out a wall between the kitchen and the formal dinning room (more about that in my next post). Here is the BEFORE!

Yes that is carpet you see. The previous homeowners had carpet in every room of the house including bathrooms.

Although the Cannon's considered everything from soapstone to concrete for their countertops we ended up with this perfect piece of granite! It was the magic moment when we found the slab that tied the cool silver/green color of their island to the warm browns in their stained oak flooring. Granite is also the easiest material to maintain and camouflages a lot of messes, with small children at home, that was a priority. The window in the bay was enlarged - the Cannons wanted lots of light.

You can see in the back, the room already had a walk-in pantry and space for an casual eating area. We eliminated most of the upper cabinets to open up the room and let the light in. They still have plenty of storage space. trust me!

We found the counter stools here (Emeco knock-offs!!!) and loved how durable and easy the aluminum would be to keep clean. We also loved how they tied together all of the stainless steel and nickel finishes on the pendent light fixtures and hardware.

We also made space for an extra pantry on this side and a home organization area to the right. Need I say more? Actually I do have a lot more to say about this kitchen in my next post ...but I wanted to get the pictures up first! Have a great weekend.

The Best Privacy Trees! What to plant if you can see too much of your neighbors yard.

Are you enticed by the fall nursery sales ? Has their motto "Fall is for planting" started you thinking about one more project you could squeeze in before the winter months? It is true anyway. If you plant in the fall you gain the benefits of a full growing season while your plants develop strong root systems during winter months.

I am dying to plant a privacy screen like this one - The tree is a Pyramidal European Hornbeam (Height 40' width 25'.) It's columnar shape makes it ideal for planing along fences for privacy with out encroaching too far into the yard or the telephone/power lines above.

Here is a smaller version - the tree is a Frons Fontaine Hornbeam and about half the size at maturity (height 25' width 10'). Because my back yard is small, long and narrow, I think that will go with the smaller tree. Plus with a name like Fons Fontaine it is sure to be a showstopper.

I actually noticed this tree screen right after it was planted five years ago (just up the street from my mom's house) and got out of my car to hunt down the owner (I had to know what they were). Fortunately, she was outside and knew the name of the trees.

I can't believe how fast Autumn came this year - What are your trying to get done before the cold weather comes? And did you miss me while I was gone? I hope to be back posting twice a week or more. I sure missed you all!

My friend just moved her son Sam (7 years old) and daughter Elli (5 years old) into the same bedroom. She asked me how to decorate the space so it would work for both genders. I immediately thought of this quilt from Garnet Hill. I love quilts! Each one is a piece of art and can be used in many different ways for both practical and visual purposes.

I like this one for its versatility - it works for both boys and girls and you can play up any of it's bright colors. I would play up the orange and red for Sam and Elli. I also like the polka dot sheet sets (also from Garnet Hill) and they come in many bright fun colors.

The bad news is that the quilt is no longer available. I searched for something similar and found this one from Sundance Catalogue ALSO UNAVAILABLE. Why are they teasing me like that????

I found this one from frolic design on Etsy by searching under keywords "pinwheel quilt".

It is not the right size but many artists on Etsy are willing to fill custom orders so it might be worth looking into.

I hope that helps Amy C.! At least it is a conceptual start. If anyone else has a suggestion I am sure she would love to hear it.

It seems so simple but the right answers always are. I keep thinking that I need to start completely over, buy all new furniture and spend more money then I have. I love this simple reminder. My home is really coming together thanks to this kind of thinking and I have lots of projects to share. The problem is that I am in the middle of four or five of them at the moment.

I do need your thoughts on something though - You are all so good at pointing me in the right direction.

I wanted to use some frames and prints that I already have to create "a series of six" on my wall.

I love the dog sketches and the frames are the right size and all identical (except for the black one I experimented on). Plus, I have everything on hand. Lauren's post about reusing things really inspired this project. Her blog is called Pure Style Home and she is awesome.

The prints are from the book: Dogs as I See Them by Lucy Dawson. I hunted it down on eBay years ago. I had three framed sketches hanging in my son's nursery in my last house. I still had several more illustrations from the book and I was able to get three matching frames, seven years later, because I remembered seeing them at Joann's Fabric and Crafts !

My intention was to paint the gold frames another color, maybe black. But once I got them on the wall, I really liked the gold and can't really imagine another color.

Is the gold tacky? Too 1992? Cheap looking? All wrong for my gray cabinets/nickel hardware kitchen around the corner?

What color should I paint them?

or is the gold just the right thing?

I can't wait to hear what you think!!!!!

5 Unexpected Flowering Plants For Your Utah Garden.

My yard is almost in! The landscapers will be finishing up tomorrow or the next day and I am so excited to start planting. I thought I would share my favorite flowing plants, I can hardly wait to go and pick them out at the nursery. Because we live in the Utah desert, gardening comes with it's limitations. If I were back in Connecticut, the list would be much longer. This list includes the heartiest and most drought resistant bunch. Oh- and you might notice that I like to stick to a white and purple color palate.

1. Iceberg Rose Bush - This blooms like gangbusters from Mothers Day until Thanksgiving. It has a really bushy nature and the thorns are little. It climbs nicely too!

2. Pee Gee Limelight Hydrangea - This is such a hearty hydrangea - if you live in the desert but want a hydrangea THIS is the one to get. The snowball blossoms turn from white to a beautiful shade of light green. In the fall you can pick the blossoms and dry them to create stunning arrangements.

3. Caesars Brother Siberian Iris - I love the grassy nature of this iris which looks great even after it blooms in the spring. The blossoms are a beautiful deep purple.

4. Alice Oakleaf Hydrangea - Another hearty Hydrangea for a desert climate. I love the giant oak leaves which turn a beautiful shade of purple and blue in the fall. The gardens at Temple Square, in Salt Lake City, have some magnificent examples. If you are there for a wedding and taking photos look to the north side and you will see a bunch of them paired with the Pee Gee Limelight Hydrangea.

5. Alliums - Members of the onion family, this spring time bulb takes weeks to develop into a basketball size head. I love to watch them change every day and am always amazed at how big they get. I am speaking of the "giganteum" variety. They also come in smaller sizes.

The Shopping Challenge and the ebay Solution

On our recent trip to Round Top, Texas, my sister, Emily purchased a pair of pants. She was certain that they were a perfect fit for her mom lifestyle and even though they were a bit expensive ($150) she would wear them so often that it wouldn't seem a sacrifice. When she returned home, away from the antiques and eccentricities of Round Top, regret set in.

What is a girl to do? Unable to return the pants - she put them on ebay and did better then expected. She sold them for $335.

I love ebay! and I am also so glad that this pair of pants isn't sitting in her closet when there is someone else out there who really wants them. They are really cute - but maybe more of a flair piece then a staple.

The pants are from a company called Magnolia Pearl.

You can see from the photo how darling the salesgirls are in the baggy linen and lace bloomers. I really love their style and have had the owner's home in my inspiration book for a couple of years. I think it is a tribute to the company that their clothing has such a following and that people will pay so much for their things on ebay. Everyone's a winner.

Round Top Texas - Where do I begin?

And that is exactly the question we asked ourselves Friday morning as we pulled into Warentown, Texas. Antiques weekend is bigger and better then you can image, with everything from total junk to fine collectible furniture and art. The only way to experience it is to just jump in feet first and so that is what we did.

No, we did not rent that Penske truck to haul home our treasures, nor did we plan to make any significant purchases. You would laugh if I told you how little cash my sister and I brought. We came to be inspired and to have some fun.

I wish I could have brought you all back a Swedish mora clock or a demi lune table - maybe next time.

We decided that the only way to truly communicate the size and scale of this event would be to record the view outside our car window as we drove through many towns hosting the show. You would see thousands of tents filled to the brim, taunting you to come inside and look for something unexpected.

I loved this grouping of furniture for my own home. I love the colors of the brown and orange leather with the zebra hide. However, it was the back to back benches and large ottoman that caught my eye. I have a long living room with windows along the back - and this arrangement wouldn't obstruct the view. Perfect.

I have an obsession with pumpkins and gourds - so a couple of these made it back with me.

Is there such thing as too many ticking striped pillows or antique linen?

The best part about this trip was the people. We met some of the most creative designers and were continuously inspired by their collections and displays. My sister is such a great friend and we had so much fun together. Since we have now been to both of the biggest antique shows in the country (Brimfield and Round Top) there is only one place left to go and that is to visit our other sister in London !!!

She changed the way I think about blogs when she wrote about blogging here. She said; "The instant friendships you make blogging are the greatest thing about it." Until then, I thought blogs were more of a one-way street and I never left comments. (even though I read them everyday). She said that it is only polite to comment after reading a post and that "if you comment on [her] blog, [she] will always post a comment on yours. It’s just good manners." Since then I have left comments on every post I have read and it works. Most people leave a comment or email back and I have made some nice friends.

Maria introduced me to another great blogger, Penelope Trunk, a career therapist. It seems that every post relates to me, personally. Start reading and you will see why I love her, unless you have all the answers to life, your career and finding eternal happiness (then you'll hate it). In a recent post: How to be more interesting to other people. She said “We each have spots in our lives where two colors are coming together and we're not sure what will happen.That's the part we should talk about when we talk about ourselves. If you limit the conversation, discussing only what you are certain about, then there's no chance to stand on equal footing with your conversation partner. You stand on equal footing when you both reveal your struggles with what you don't know yet, and the conversation can contribute to the answer."

Lightbulb moment. My blog has been a one-way conversation and that is really not the point of blogging, is it? It made me sad to think that I don't know my readers and they don't know me. Most of you know that I am a full-time-mom who just finished building/remodeling my third home (I only own one at time). I love everything to do with homes; buying, selling, fixing up, tearing down, remodeling, redecorating, or starting from scratch. I have always worked with clients as an interior designer, however, that has never been my full-time occupation. Before becoming a mother, I worked in the corporate world as a marketing and communications consultant. I am an entrepreneur and designer by nature and I love to have a project.

Those are the things I am certain about. However, This is where my two colors are colliding: I planned to have another baby at this point in my life. The first one took eight years to produce so I am not sure if/when another will come our way. In the mean time, I am picking up more design clients and having a blast navigating the design business. I am not sure what this next stage in my life looks like but so far the path is beautiful and intriguing.

Brimfield Antiques Market Photo:Country Living

I love this photo! The anticipation! The excitement! It is the opening of the Brimfield Antiques Show in Massachusetts, one of the biggest antique shows in the country (and probably the World). There are roughly 5000 dealers and it is held three weekends a year.

When I lived in Connecticut (1 hour away) I never missed this show. It was so much fun. I didn't realize how good I had it until I moved back home to Utah, where antique shows are non-existent. It has been a pretty big pendulum swing - from one extreme to another.

Next weekend I will be traveling to Round Top, Texas for Antiques Weekend and I can't wait. My sister, Emily, who lives in Dallas, will be meeting me there. We both have toddlers at home who will NOT be traveling with us, so this is a big treat.

I can't wait to return with photos and hopefully a few purchases. It will be interesting to compare the two shows. One thing I loved about Brimfield, which will hopefully be true of Round Top, was that there was everything from affordable cool junk to the out-of-reach rare antiques.

I found some great information about shopping at Round Top here thanks to Joni at Cote de Texas and here thanks to Garden Antqs Vintage. But if any of you have been there I would love to hear about it.

How to Stage Your Home For Sale

As many of you know, my mom is a Realtor. We have worked closely together over the years staging homes for her both her clients and mine. I recently came across this home for sale in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake City and thought is was a perfect example of how to stage a home for sale. I took the photos from the MLS.

It may appear that this super-clean, super-organized, super-good-taste family has just stepped out for a bite to eat while you are previewing their home. But in reality this home has probably been professionally staged and most of their belongings are in storage.

Tip#1 Ask a third party to help you stage your house. If a realtor or decorator isn't in the picture - call a friend. They won't be attached to your belongings and therefore able to make emotion-free suggestions about what to remove or change.

Tip #2 Take your unnecessary belongings and put them in storage. Your home needs to feel like a hotel so that a buyer can imagine themselves living there. Plus your home will feel bigger if it isn't cluttered with stuff.

Tip#2 Accessorize - Your home should feel finished. Accessories help give the feeling of being complete - Like there are no projects left to do. Lamps, picture frames, baskets, books and pottery are all great neutral accessories.

Tip#3 Anything distracting must go. If it is worn-out, ugly, or distasteful it needs to go. I know this sounds obvious, but sometimes there are things that you are using 'just to get by' for a couple of years that fit into this category.

Tip#3 Buy or borrow furniture if you have to. When I sold my last home, I borrowed everything I could from my parents and in-laws. I still didn't have a decent dinning room set so I bought one on Craigslist for $800. It wasn't my favorite but it made the room look great. I put it right back on Craigslist after I moved and sold it for $100 profit.

Tip#4 Things don't have to be perfect, just remember to keep them clean, neutral and organized.

At Home With Great Designers

There have been so many fabulous home tours on my favorite blogs lately. If you haven't already seen these - be sure to check them out.

Cote De Texas always has excellent home tours on her blog. Her commentary is the greatest because you feel like you are touring the home together. The first tour is from her blog and is actually three homes that have been owned and decorated by Ginger Barber, a Houston designer and shop owner. Her shop is called The Sitting Room. I love to see the way people (especially designers) live and decorate for themselves.

The second tour is the home of Brooke Giannetti, Los Angeles based interior designer. Her shop is called Giannetti Home. She is so fabulous and so are her designs.

I loved reading about how she decorates for herself verses her clients. She said, "I found all of the rugs at flea markets, and all of the chandeliers were either purchased at a flea market or on Ebay. It was a wonderful way to furnish my home, but an impossible way to furnish anyone else's home."

Reading that was a light-bulb moment for me and made a lot of sense. There is so much to learn about the business of interior design. It is as much of a challenge as the design work itself.

I loved both of these homes because they were, of course, FABULOUS. But also because they had so much personality and character. I love a home that looks as though it has evolved and grown up with a family!

Identity Crisis

My poor sister has been listening to me debate my inner decorator for years. She actually cracked up on the phone the other day and laughed until she was near tears. Who can blame her? I am like a broken record - trying to figure out how to furnish my home. You see - there are two sides to me. One thinks that she has more money than she really does and thinks she deserves to travel the world shopping for each and every piece of furniture.

The other side fears the great depression is nearly upon us and wants to salvage furniture from thrift stores and estate sales. Then she wants to reupholster, or refinish the piece herself!

I need chairs for my family room - really bad. I have seriously considered the entire spectrum of options. From this Baker chair, which retails for $3800 (ottoman $1600)

to this chair from JCPenney, which is on sale for $499. Multiply each option by three because that is how many I need.

I finally settled on a third option which is to purchase three chairs separately. I made this decision as I stood in a furniture consignment store paying $200 for this one.

It is a short squatty wing back and I love it. By the time I buy fabric and pay for recovering - It will cost around $1000. But by doing it this way I will have endless fabric options (top priority for me) and a chair that I actually tried and liked before purchasing.

I think this solution will work for me for a while - but I am sure the issue will resurface. Does anyone have this problem too? What is the answer? Do you wait forever - save up and buy exactly the right furniture or do you compromise and "make do" so that you actually have a place to sit!?!

Get Inspired!

It seems we are all in slump these days. I don't know wether it is the recession, the winter weather or what. But it has made me think about creative inspiration and how to get it.

Shopping is one of the single most creatively inspiring activities I can think of. For me it is not about spending money. I could shop for weeks and never spend a dime. I just like to see what products are out there, and how they are packaged or displayed. I am always inspired by artist/entrepreneurs and love to look online at places like Ebay and Etsy.

I recently discovered the Pounce feature on Etsy which will "find items available for purchase from shops that have just sold an item, and from undiscovered shops waiting for their first sale." I like it because I find things that are completely random - things I would never go looking for.

You can't tell from this picture but they didn't miss a beat- gas lanterns, operating shutters, dental mold, and wonderful rock details around the windows. You can learn so much from blogging. I just followed some links to this kitchen designed by Nancy Fishelson. I have this one in my tear sheets - and have used it for inspiration for more then one project. (does it look familiar Melissa J.?). I never knew who the designer was or where it was located until I went to Nancy's website.

Turns out that the property, Rosebush Farm located in Litchfield County, Connecticut, is currently under contract AND there was a moving/estate sale earlier this month. THIS is why I miss living in Connecticut. You know I would have been at that sale just to tour the property- all 20 acres.

After studying it over and over I concluded that what I love about the design is the lack of upper cabinets and the abundance of windows, white cabinets and AWESOME looking counter tops.

The counter tops are a material called Fireslate. When I looked into it for my own home I was warned by several bloggers and even the manufacture that it develops a patina over the years. That is code for "looks dirty" in my book so I decided against it. It comes across as a warm grey color in this photo, which is so soft and different from soapstone. When I got my hands on some samples from Fireslate I was disappointed. There was a grey and a black but they didn't come across as the same color. Melissa J. ended up using a warm grey Quartz in her kitchen that really captured the same look and feel as this kitchen.

This home makes me miss all of the wonderful things about living on the east coast. Speaking of which, there is one other thing that makes this kitchen great. Check out the view out the window.

Velvet and Linen

Amy- Thanks for introducing me to my latest Blog-crush - Velvet and Linen. Brooke Giannetti is a designer and her blog is stunning. She has a way of making you feel like an old friend as you scroll down the screen swooning over every image. I loved this post, where she shows how her husband, Steve, used some very simple tile pieces to create a wood panel look in a client's bathroom.

I officially have a blog list now. I know it is short but I only want to put my very favorites there.

Ski Rack

Why I am posting photos of the inside of my garage? Because I am so excited about our new ski rack. This was a store display piece made for skis that I found for sale in Park City a couple of months back. I wasn't sure that my husband would like it or even use it for that matter. And if he didn't what else was I going to do with it??? I was also nervous that our super fat skis would be to wide and tall. But alas - it is perfect and now that ski season is in full swing- we couldn't live with out it.

Sometimes you've got to buy it when you see it.

Fireplaces

I have had four people ask me about fireplaces this week. I think it is a sign that I need to finish mine! or at least post something about them. Like I mentioned before, all of the fireplace designs that I have on file for my house seem to be the same design over and over again. At least I am consistent. They have a slate slab surround with a simple mantel painted white.

I like this fireplace a lot and plan to do something very similar only in white instead of black. It comes across as a pretty straightforward mantel but actually has quite a bit of dimension to it which is what I like about it.

Better Homes and Gardens

Here is another great design with little yellow glass tiles in a brick pattern with a simple white mantel. The color is playful and fun but can also be taken seriously.

I know it is blurry but look past the pumpkin to the fireplace. Simple - white -mantel hmmmmmm.

Tricia Foley

I think the surround on this one is concrete. It is so masculine and refined. I think it looks like leather. If only I didn't have such a bad experience with my concrete floors in my laundry room, I might go for this.

This is one of my friend's mantels. We didn't even straighten up or shut the cupboards for the photo. woops. The surround is tumbled brick tiles.

I took this picture home and drew-up an even simpler, chunkier design to go with the rock in my last home.

The scale was perfect for the room and is still one of my favorite parts of the house.

I love my magazine subscriptions. I currently have subscriptions to Country Living, Country Home, Cottage Living, Better Homes and Gardens, Real Simple and Home Companion. I had to laugh at myself during one of my interior design classes a few years ago. My instructor passed out a list of recommended subscriptions and none of mine were even mentioned. OK so I am not that sophisticated but I have had those forever and I love them. Over the years I have developed this little system to keep track of great ideas in my magazines and it has worked really well.

Never throw away Christmas issues - they are fun to come back to year after year. What you dismissed one year may be the perfect project another year. Keep the issues packed away with your decorations and they will be a welcome surprize next year.
Once you are tired of an issue (all other months besides Dec.) - go through it one more time and tear out the photos and articles that appeal to you or that you think you would like to reference later. Then THROW AWAY the rest of the magazine.
Put each page in a page protector and then into a binder. I used to categorize Kitchen/living room/bathrooms/. But now I just stick them in the binder. If I make it too complicated I will never do it. Interestingly- they are never really hard to find when I go back.

When you are ready to start a project these binders become your most valuable resource because they compile all of the things you like. You will begin to see common threads and understand your personal style better. Lately I have been tearing out fireplaces that I like. When I look at all the sheets together it is funny because every single one is the same -

that you all had a wonderful Christmas. I have to say that mine was great. Christmas did not kick my butt this year (as it has in the past) and I was able to slow down and enjoy the season for a change. Part of the fun this year was sharing ideas with all of you. Thank you for reading, commenting and emailing me. It really was a lot of fun and a nice diversion from home remodeling and building.

But now it is time to get back to the drawing board. There are so many wonderful things to share with you. I can't wait to get posting again.

Recipe Exchange

Children's Book Exchange

My siblings just started a tradition of giving each other children's books for Christmas. Now that everyone is married and has at least one child - this works really great for us. Growing up we really enjoyed giving to each other because everyone spent a lot of time and energy coming up with thoughtful gifts to give. Now that we are busy with families of our own, this tradition helps take the pressure off but it also allows us to give a meaningful gift.

In November, I like to host my book club. Instead of the customary deep and serious conversation about literature (lol) we do a craft. This year we attempted soldered necklace pendants like these. Favorites

So we can't all be Oprah and give away all of our favorite things to hundreds of people- but a 'favorite' gift is always well received no matter it's size or cost.

One year I received this kitchen utensil from my sister-in-law. It is by far the most used item in my kitchen and inevitably, I think of her each time I grab it. She is so clever, and a good cook.

Paper Products

Have you ever considered giving the wrapping paper as the gift? How about delivering a couple of rolls of carefully selected gift wrap to your neighbors this year. Maybe your sisters would love a box of ready-to-go tags? These are things we all love to use but never make time to shop for or splurge on - so they make excellent gifts.

Another idea is to put together a paper-products-for-the-party gift. How nice would it be to have festive paper plates, napkins, and cups on hand this year?

Spices

10 neighbor gifts ready to go.....

I bought these little tins here and filled them with spices. Each one has almost all of the ingredients for one recipe. Each recipe is one of our favorites (which I think is key- you must give something tried and true).

Oh- how this appealed to my sense of order and inner-desire to be an assembly line worker (maybe just for a day). My son loved it too and was actually very helpful - he put the lids on and tipped the teaspoon into the tin after I filled it.

Next I printed the rest of the recipe out onto these stickers and put them on the bottom of the tins. It was really easy because the stickers are Avery labels and have a template that works with my printer.

I used a pasta salad recipe, a roast beef sandwich recipe for a slow cooker, and a spice mix for Mexican chicken.

Pre Loaded

I love to listen to music while I exercise but I am not a big music person. I feel stumped when I go to iTunes looking for new songs for my playlist. So my dream gift would be an iPod pre-loaded with music that I like - but didn't know that I liked. This would also be a perfect gift for an older person who is 'technically challenged' and doesn't know how to download music to their iPod.

For a less expensive spin on this idea, try downloading audiobooks from the library for FREE. Hint: most books from the library are not compatible with iPod - which gives you an excuse to buy a less expensive listening device. Tree Bucket

With two dogs and a three-year-old, my tree skirt never stays straight, and my tree's water is always being splashed. Why must they play there?

Solution! Instead of a tree skirt, I put my tree and stand in one of these buckets. What a great look, plus it is totally practical (no splashing water on my hardwood floors).

Where to buy- I bought a galvanized bucket at IFA $25 (It is silver instead of brown) and found the perfect fitting tree stand at Smith's Market Place (a local Salt Lake City grocery store). Fortunately, I have two left over from last year if anyone would like to purchase them from me. I will even throw in the tree stand.

My tree is not up yet - but I wanted to post this before you all got yours up just in case you wanted to use this idea.

Nativity

When it comes to Christmas decorations, I am really lacking. Surprised? For someone so into shopping and decorating I should be fully stocked. As I look back on the last 12 years I realize that making other people's Christmas decorations (i.e. Santas) took up the bulk of my time, space and tolerance for trees, berries, and ornaments before Dec. 1 even hit. Additionally, this is the first year that I have had a child at Christmas. My son has been an infant and a toddler at Christmas but now he finally 'gets it'. It is so much fun to see his eyes light up when he sees a Christmas tree with twinkling lights. It makes me realize how few childhood Christmases there really are in one's life so I don't want to miss anything. Don't laugh but we don't even have stockings for our mantal (I guess we don't really have a mantal this year either but I have a plan).

So short story long (Ben) - I was shopping for a nativity scene on Etsy and look at this adorable felted wool set I found. I love the animals they look so sweet.

It is made by Bossys Feltworks and will only cost you $450 -yikes . Maybe I will just start with this sweet lamb made by The Gnome Home for $18.

TeePee

Don't tell my son, but he is getting this teepee for Christmas. I found it on KSLClassifieds, (a Salt Lake City web site like craigslist). Melissa, the gal selling the teepee, actually makes them and her prices are GREAT - $50 for the biggest one. The Pottery Barn sells a similar teepee for $199.

It looks like the Pottery Barn uses a little higher quality materials but Melissa will sew the teepee out of any fabric that I want and come on it's for the basement!!!

Pet Calendar

Give a twist on the old family photo calendar using classic pet photos.

Many of you have probably created something like this before using your family photos with a company like shutterfly.com, kodakgallery.com or snapfish.com. to print them in calendar format.

I received a Pet Calendar from my friend, Kim, three years ago - featuring her three dogs and lots of great doggy quotes. It was so much fun that I had to copy. So last year I put together a Pet Calendar for my siblings and cousins featuring all of our family pets. I sent one to Kim too, hoping that imitation was the greatest form of flattery.

I like this idea because it puts an original spin on a gift that you may have already given. I am sure there are a thousand other ways to make those custom calendars more original. How about nature photos from 12 local hikes (directions and details about the hike included)? Or 12 of your best recipes with delicious mouth watering photos? Your kids could even come up with their own theme and give them to friends.

OK so this takes some time and prep-work. In the case of the Pet Calendar, I started collecting photos in July (that is really the hard part) and created/purchased the calendar in October when Shutterfly.com gives 50% off. Each calendar was about $10 and I had 15 gifts ready to go before Halloween.

If this is too overwhelming for this year, keep it in the back of your mind for next year. It is something really fun and simple to work on in the fall. Not so much fun when you are frazzled and stressed during the holidays.

Wrapping Station Revised

I have been scheming since July about how to get a wrapping paper station built for my laundry room. My Father-in-law and I came up with some designs but they are pretty low on the priority list right now. I knew I would feel bad about not having a wrapping paper station this year so I decided on a very scaled back approach.

This is a paper towel holder and keeps my ribbons and super-sharp-scissors at my finger tips. I think it will do the trick?

Advent Calander

I make these advent calendars every year. I am sort of addicted to them. But they are great gifts and are fun to pull out every year for your own family too.

To create this one-of-a-kind advent calendar you glue your favorite family photos on the back of numbered tiles (available in the kit). It is fun because each day in December you can turn over a number tile to reveal a fond memory or friendly smile.

Farewell Old Friend

When we pulled up to the Trolley Square shopping mall tonight I saw that my favorite clothing store was advertising 30%-50% off everything!!! The big orange liquidation signs seemed a little tacky and out of character for the store that had been offering me a diet coke upon arrival for the past 10 years. To my disappointment, I learned that Harold's is going out of business.

When it comes to clothes - I like to find a great piece and wear it over and over again until I am sick to death of it. Nothing bothers me more then clothing that only lasts one season. That is why I loved Harold's. Their clothes were trendy yet traditional and they have lasted forever. The pants were always cut just right, the fabrics never lost their shape, my sweaters didn't pile, and I never had to throw something out for being just wrong.

Not only will I miss the clothes, I will miss the memories associated with shopping there. My mom, sisters and I have marked every birthday, vacation, and Christmas with a trip to Harold's. Many special occasions have required outfits from Harold's and many of life's disappointments have lead to consolation shopping there. My husband purchased a necklace for me there for our first anniversary and it is still my favorite.

There is a lot of uncertainty about the future of our economy right now and it is really unsettling to watch a place of so much significance in my shopping life - fold. It is like saying good-bye to an old friend.

Sometimes I forget that we basically have a Pottery Barn Outlet here in Salt Lake City. The other day I went to the Down East Home Clearance Center, which is the outlet for the outlet. I made my way past all of the really damaged merchandise and mistakenly monogrammed jewelry boxes to the headboards. I found two great headboards for our bedrooms. The mattresses-on-metal-frames were just not doing it for me. I purchased each headboard for $75.

Yes- they both had damage but it was minimal. This one, for my room, has a little rip on the top. I thought that I would recover it but I really can't see the rip unless I go to the corner of the room, crank my neck and stand on my tip toes. I think I will save the recovering until after my son writes on it with magic marker or something.

This one is for my son's room and needs some touch-up paint in the groove of one of the panels. I can handle that! Sorry that these are not photos of the actual beds. At this moment, they are either being slept in or are not made!

New Energy

It is true...if you need a lift... help someone else. I have been feeling really down about my house lately. It seems that there are a million projects left before it will feel complete. And I haven't known where to begin with the furniture purchasing. Do I by a dining room set, new couches for the family room, chairs for the living room, a bedroom set, a flat screen for the basement? I can't afford to do all at once and I need to save up for just one of those things anyway. What! I am out of money? There is a recession? Cancer? ugggg.

So I have been rattling around my house mentally braking down with every consideration. Finally, something clicked and I have started making progress. That something was a morning I spent with a friend who was going through the same thing. She purchased a beautiful home about a year ago and (like me) wanted to clean the slate and purchase all new furniture and accessories. She made several great purchases but once the economy stopped so did she. The assignment was to help her use what she had on hand to finish decorating her home. In the beginning, I was skeptical. How would she feel about hanging pictures that she didn't like? But as we progressed I remembered that finishing a room felt really good, even if it wasn't perfect. There were pictures on the walls, towels in the bathrooms, accessories on the night stands. It felt complete and it was inspiring to put our heads together to find new uses for old objects.

So I came home and started looking around. I mean really looking around and I came up with some pretty good ideas using the stuff that I have. Once my brain was going in that direction it kept going. My poor husband has been hanging stuff all weekend. In addition, I broke down and bought a couple more used pieces of furniture to get me through for a while. It feels really good to be out of the rut and seeing possibilities again.

This is an idea that I have had on file for years (it was probably a Country Living Magazine). I pulled it up for Melissa because we were trying to figure out how to breathe new life into some old mirrors and prints that she had. I like this idea because many times it is the print that you get sick of - not the frame - and since most frames are custom, it is nearly impossible to find a new print to fit inside just right.

So find a frame you like and a simple little wreath. In this case it is dried boxwood. Don't forget to finish it off with a 3" double sided satin ribbon in a great color. If you are in Salt Lake, you can purchase it by the yard at the Lace Place.

A Brand New Day

I love this new ad from Target. It gives me hope.

I have hesitated writing about the economy even though it is on my mind a lot. It is such a downer and I want my blog to be a place that inspires, uplifts and sometimes provides an escape from the humdrum. I have also hesitated writing about my husbands cancer, also a downer, but on my mind a lot.

We all need things to look forward to. But with so much uncertainty about the future, both personally and for our country, I think it is going to be the little things that get me through. For many of us, big projects and plans have been put on hold. But that doesn't mean that life comes to a screeching hault. There are still so many simple and creative ways to add warmth and character to our homes with out spending a lot of money. That is the message in the ad and the reason why I love it.

I have really loved blogging about my remodel. You have all added so much to the process. I hope that you will continue to read and leave comments as I shift priorities a bit. I want to continue to bring you awesome home renovation ideas and walk you though my friend Rebecca's project, because it is awesome. But I also want to bring you ideas for simpler protects - like where to pick out pumpkins this year. And with the holidays right around the corner, there will be a lot of great gift ideas and decorating tips to share with you.

There are many things to look forward to right now. We just got a new puppy, we are going to teach our son to ski this winter, the house needs lots of little touches that I could spend hours obsessing over, Christmas will not kick my butt this year! and of course, my husband will recover from cancer.

PS - A lot of people have asked me how much $$ I spent on pumpkins. I have now idea why everyone is so concerned about money right now?JK - Just so you know, all of these pumpkins cost about $40.
